Sofia Macanas, PSW

Carecor PSW and Lifestyle Juggler

Sofia enjoys working with Carecor, having been a Personal Support Worker with the company since September 2011. Since then, she has been able to schedule the frequency of her shifts. “I like that I can choose my hours and how many days off I have to take. That works out well for me.”

Sofia works as a PSW for Carecor almost every day, but she is also able to take time off to do the things she loves most, like going out to the movies with her friends. Currently living in Hamilton, she gets placed in busy facilities such as St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. “I worked with another agency before and I was off for about three months. Carecor is the first agency that I applied to that gave me the opportunity to work again,” Sofia says.

Though she was a bit nervous the first time she walked into a new environment at the hospital’s mental health unit, Sofia is now confident about her skills in providing quality personal care.

With a background in physiotherapy, Sofia is able to put all her knowledge to work and give her patients the best attention possible. Before she became a PSW, she was a nanny in Waterloo, until she decided she wanted to become a caregiver to fill the demand in the city. During the weekends she took courses while she still maintained her position.

“I like working with the elderly,” she says. “I love helping people, I love talking to them and making sure that I take care of them.”

For Sofia, the best part of her job is when her senior patients thank her for her help. “I think that means the most, as they are very grateful.”

Sofia has advice for those who want to get into the PSW profession: “You have to love what you do. The similarity between nurses and PSWs is that they’re about helping people. I really love my job as a PSW.”
