Patient Attendants-Acute Care Hospital, Casual Shifts  


Job Summary

A Patient Attendant, under the direction of immediate supervisor (RN or LPN), is responsible to observe and assist with the care of one or two patients/clients who is/are a potential risk to harm him/herself or others, as described in the patient/client care plan, and in accordance with all required internal and external standards of practice.

The Patient Attendant follows the direction of the supervisor, who delegates care activities within the domain of the Patient Attendants responsibilities.

Hours of Work:

  • Must be available to work a minimum of 45 hours per month which includes two (2) shifts on a weekend
  • Able to be scheduled for assignments that are considered “urgent/last minute/early morning” (e.g. called for assignments within 2 hours or less from start of shift)
  • Flexible to work all shifts (Days, Evenings and Nights), including  weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays 


  • Must have Grade 12 High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have an interest working in an acute care hospital setting
  • Must have CPR - Level A
  • Must be willing to undergo a Police Background Check
  • Proof of current immunization for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (MMRV), Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis. Hepatitis B
  • Proof of negative TB skin test within the past one (1) year or negative chest x-ray within the past five (5) years
  • Proof of N95 Mask Fit Test Certificate with a date of issue in the last two years
  • Understands and implements infection prevention practices
  • Maintains confidentiality of client information and care

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide constant safety observation with one or two patients
  • Provide comfort measures as assessed by RN/LPN
  • Work jointly with the RN/LPN to ensure appropriate ongoing patient/client coverage as arranged when attendant has to leave the bedside
  • Report to the RN/LPN any issues or concerns related to patient/client – eg. In situations of potential harm, to actively prevent injury and to involve professional staff.
