Critical Care Information System (CCIS) at Trillium Mississauga

The following information is to be noted for our Critical Staff working at Trillium Mississauga – if you have any questions, please contact the ICU Clinical Leader or Unit Clerk.

The Ministry of Health collects Critical Care Information System is used on every intensive care unit to provide province-wide information on access to critical care, quality of care, and outcomes for critically ill patients. At Trillium Mississauga, the data is collected on the night shifts and the importance and explanation of the data is reviewed with staff. This is helpful for agency RNs to know when completing the CCIS data sheet provided on night shift to all assigned RNs at the bedside.

The Critical Care Information System (CCIS) is the most comprehensive source of province-wide information on access to critical care, quality of care and outcomes for critically ill patients. As part of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's Critical Care Strategy, the CCIS has been developed to provide real time data on every patient admitted to Level 3 and Level 2 critical care units in Ontario's acute care hospitals. It is intended to provide the ministry, Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) and hospitals with information on bed availability, critical care service utilization and patient outcomes.

The CCIS has been implemented in 201 adult and pediatric Level 3 and Level 2 critical care units. The system provides an important medium for monitoring and managing the province's critical care resources more effectively, as well as highlighting opportunities for implementing quality improvement initiatives at individual hospitals and across the LHINs.  Additionally, CCIS supports the Ventilator Associated Pneumonia and Central Line Infection data collection under the ministry's Patient Safety Initiative. The data captured in CCIS is also used to develop quarterly reports to inform health care system improvements.

The following is the Workflow process for CCIS (Ontario Critical Care Information Systems) data collection.

CCIS Data Collection process for ICU

The CCIS data is collected in THP MISS ICU in the following process:
·    The evening/night clerical staff will print off an LSI (Life Support Interventions) worksheet for each ICU  patient.
·    The clerk will distribute the LSI sheets to the assigned ICU patient nurses on the night shift
·    The nurse will fill out the sheet and return it to the desk by midnight to the UCA/CL
·    The clerk will enter the data in CCIS from the completed worksheets (after midnight).

The UCA’s will continue to admit and discharge patients to/ from the CCIS active list.

When a patient is admitted to Trillium Mississauga ICU:
The clerk will print off a MODS worksheet and give it to the RN admitting the patient.  The nurse will fill in the sheet and return it to the clerk, who will enter the MODS data in CCIS.

When a patient is discharged from Trillium Mississauga ICU:
The clerk will print off the final LSI worksheet and give it to the RN responsible for this patient.  The nurse will fill in the sheet and return it to the clerk, who will then enter the date before discharging the patient from the CCIS active list.
